Deborah Lewis (Regional Representative - BC Interior Health Region)
Deb graduated form UBC as Family Nurse Practitioner. I am an FNP working in a semi rural community of 2,000 that swells by at least 10,000 in the summer months due to holiday visitors to our community. It is challenging changing strategies in my practice from managing chronic diseases and being the main provider of women's health in our area to dealing with the episodic events/accidents of holiday activities. It keeps me current in the full scope of NP practice. My recent challenge is in the changing world of Primary Care and moving toward offering service in our neighboring First Nations communities.
I hope to provide insight from the perspective of our varying regional communities and practices within the Interior Health Authority.
Ruth Larson (Regional Representative - Vancouver Island Region)
Ruth received her Diploma in Nursing from Vancouver General Hospital School of Nursing in 1985. She completed both her Bachelor of Nursing and her Masters of Nursing (NP Stream) at the University of Victoria. Since graduation from the NP program in 2007, she has worked as an NP for the Vancouver Island Health Authority in a Primary Health Care Clinic for persons aged 55+. Ruth has been a regular attendee of the BCNPA AGM in past years, and has been a presenter at past BCNPA conferences. She is also the past chair (2009) of the VIHA, NP Community of Practice.
“I am proud to be in a community of nurses that work tirelessly to advance a model of care for patients that is both collaborative and patient focused. I view the BCNPA as an important vehicle for communicating to legislative authorities, and to the public, about the positive contributions NPs do make to the publicly funded health care system. We have an enormous potential for transformation of primary health care in B.C. There is still much work to be done to continue this transformation, and to advance collaborative practice models that maximize the use of the knowledge and skill of Nurse Practitioners. I look forward to working with the executive, and members of the BCNPA, to continue this work.”
