Key Note Speakers
Marlene Smadu RN, BScN, MAdEd, EdD is the Associate Dean, Southern Saskatchewan Campus and International Student Affairs for the College of Nursing, University of Saskatchewan. Prior to this role, she served as the Assistant Deputy Minister of Health and Principal Nursing Advisor for the government of Saskatchewan, and Education Consultant and Executive Director at the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses Association. Dr. Smadu is a member of the Board for the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) and is the facilitator for the Saskatchewan Union of Nurses (SUN) – Government of Saskatchewan Partnership Table that addresses nursing retention and recruitment. Dr. Smadu, having served as President of the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA), is now the 3rd Vice President of the International Council of Nurses. She is co-chair of the CNA National Expert Commission on the Health of the Nation and the Future of the Health System. Dr. Smadu’s professional practice is nursing and health policy, and her research program includes health human resource planning and development, Aboriginal health, the development of quality workplaces, quality improvement, health and nursing policy, knowledge transfer, and leadership.
Barbara L. Mildon, RN, PhD, CHE, CCHNC(C )-Barbara Mildon’s nursing experience spans the health-care continuum, from hospital to home care, regulation to research, and bedside to boardroom. She is currently vice president of professional practice and research and chief nurse executive at the Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences in Whitby, Ontario. A life-long learner, Mildon’s graduate education includes a PhD in nursing from the University of Toronto. She has a long record of service to provincial and national nursing organizations and presently serves as CNA’s president-elect. The recipient of several awards, including the CNA Centennial Award and the RNAO Award of Merit, Mildon has published and presented widely. Her abiding joy is speaking and being with nurses and supporting and celebrating nursing practice excellence.

She inspires busy people to put their own health and well being back on their priority lists with a small steps approach that leaves them believing they can.With a Masters in Kinesiology, a BA in Psychology, a specialization in Health and Exercise Psychology, and training as a Co-Active Life Coach Michelle combines mind, body, and practicality to inspire change!
